Enrico Caruso: A Biography
Published in Hardcover by Best Books (January, 2001)
Author: Pierre Van Rensselaer Key
Average review score:

Most intimate if not definitive
Key's biography was written shortly after Caruso's death by someone who knew him and loved him as a singer and as a man. All subsequent bios owe much to this one (even Caruso errors, like the weird assertion that his mother bore 18 children).

I love the intimacy, the palpable sense of loss that permeates the book, as if the author would gladly burn his manuscript if only the great tenor would return.

made out of interviews
Key made a lot of interviews with Caruso before he died at the age of 48, the interviews found their way into the book. The book is one of the most important about Caruso.

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy

Author: Mary Van Rensselaer Thayer

Still the best
I read this book when I was 13 and tried to find it again for years. This is still the best biography of JBK ever written. It's tasteful, warm, witty and touching. It was written at the happiest time of Jacqueline Kennedy's life and it really shows. Also, it's the only biography that was written in part with JBK's cooperation. If you collect Kennedy books, you must have this one.

A review of jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy
This book is great. I give it two thumbs up. The book actually takes you into the life of Americas first lady. The book expresses jackies thaughts and feelings toward the Kennedy family. The book also gives Jackie credit for her intelligence and talks about her education and where she received her education from. This is a part of Jackie you have never seen before. The style that the author uses to write this book is also quite impressive. So many books that have been written in regrds of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy do not give facts about her individual self as this book has done. Most books over Jacqueline tell us only about her life with Mr. Kennedy and her life after his death, but this book gives us information about her life and who she was apart from the Kennedys.

Social Ladder
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (June, 1975)
Author: Mary K. Van Rensselaer
Average review score:

Birth, breeding, and backround...
Mrs. John King Van Rensselaer, a lady from one of New York's oldest and most respected Dutch families has given us the chance to view the world of high society in the fabled Gilded Age. We see the people for who they really are, stripped of titles and jewels. Historically important, witty, charming, filled with the essence of wealth and power, this book would only be uncomfortable for someone without breeding.

The Andean Cocaine Industry
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (June, 1996)
Authors: Patrick L. Clawson and Rensselaer W., III Lee
Average review score:

Comprehensive
"The Andean Cocaine Industry" is an expert account of drug trafficking. The authors leave no stone unturned in studying this important subject. They must be commended...this is a remarkable book.

The Andean Cocaine Industry
As a person who has lived in and conducted business in Colombia, and as someone who is interested in the subjects of Colombian history, economics, and the country's struggle to maintain its own internal sovereignty, I found The Anean Cocaine Industry to be extremely informative. Bravo to Clawson and Lee -- a job well done. If you are interested in cocaine, its production and its socio-political and economic impacts, this book is an educational must read. Bottom line: a wonderfully comprehensive text on this subject.

Dirty business
Clawson and Lee managed to compile a vast amount of data from varied sources to produce a balanced on-the-mark analysis of the cocaine industry and its impact on the region. A very impressive book.

Outdoor Lighting Pattern Book
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (01 November, 1996)
Authors: Russell P. Leslie, Paula A. Rodgers, Kevin Heslin, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Lighting Research Center, and Lighting Research Center
Average review score:

expert opinion
Read the editorial review thoroughly. This book is about large-scale public lighting such as streets, parks and parking lots. The title misled me but my wife, an architect, commandeered the book for her own reference library. I, of course, was looking for something more like Jan Moyer's "The Landscape Lighting Book".

Smuggling Armageddon: The Nuclear Black Market in the Former Soviet Union and Europe
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (September, 1998)
Author: Rensselaer W. Lee
Average review score:

As clear on the subject as is possible.
Mr. Lee has taken this obscure but, currently vital topic of concern to a level of understanding based on the little information actually available on the smuggling of nuclear materials. His text is careful to explain that there is a lot of ambiguity and concern for facts in his statements. It is very clear that the actual materials successfully smuggled is not and will probably never be known. His lists and charts are a big help in understanding why people try to smuggle these terrifying products. His information is carefully researched and documented with a large array of footnotes in a block section at the end of the book. Although it is a small book, it represents a very large amount of available data condensed into one place. The information about the involvement of government officials and the manipulations of the Russian Mafia show how convoluted this racket can become and why they are getting away with it. In short, he has tackled an obscure subject in the same way he approached the Andean Cocaine trade. The book is an easy and alarming read.
